Mr Gizmo was asked to help a close friend, a category one handicap player who was having a nightmare with short putts. His friend had got to the stage where he felt he could no longer play golf as he was consistently missing from two to three feet and often shorter. Mr Gizmo asked his friend to describe how he felt over the shot. His friend said that his problem on very short putts was caused by anxiety! He knew he was going to miss, so he did. Mr Gizmo explained that he didn't want to know his friend's problem he wanted to know how his friend felt playing a short putt. After a moment or two's thought his friend stated that he felt his eyes track the putter going back on the wrong line. Just as he started the putter forward his eyes then jumped to see where the ball and then the hole was. Coincidentally, his heart missed a beat resulting in a horrific jab at the ball. After the abortive attempt his hands felt really sweaty. Mr Gizmo new that there was mechanically only three ways to miss a short putt, left, right, and short. Unfortunately, his friend had come up with a fourth way to miss, an anxiety attack brought on by the FEAR of missing. Mr Gizmo gave his friend's condition some serious thought and decided that the quickest way to solve his friend's fear of missing was to make the hole appear larger. He couldn't actually cut a larger hole so he decided to see how the hole would look in the vertical plane. He made a target so that his friend could take proper aim. The target was a Spinner which was placed in front of the hole. The very first Spinner was made from a sweet tin and two bicycle spokes. Mr Gizmo's friend could not believe the results. He could hole out with no problem, the sweet tin looked huge. He hit the ball at the target, made it spin and the ball went in the hole. Further experimentation with the gizmo showed that by controlling the number of spins the tin lid took helped his friend realise how positive he could actually strike the ball at the hole. This meant that his confidence grew because every time he made the gizmo spin, the ball went in. The more his confidence grew the further away from the target he moved. He continued to hole out from further and further away with greater consistency. In fact, his friend now sees the Spinner in front of the hole on the golf course. Several people have since suggested that Mr Gizmo make the Spinner smaller, all he says is the last thing you need is the hole smaller when you are having problems, you want it bigger!! The Spinner is the Never up Never Spin Gizmo, by actively encouraging you to Spin the Gizmo you are rarely short which significantly increases your chance of holing the putt .
